War and law
Wars are seldom waged without any legal constraints. Throughout history, very
diverse societies have attempted to regulate the perpetration of violence,
even in its most extreme forms. In defining what is considered necessary,
permissible, or prohibited in warfare, a society also defines itself. In
the wake of the catastrophic Thirty Years War, attempts were made to establish
